Why Cold Calling For Canadians?
How many times were you at a seminar or workshop where you heard advice about the cold calling that you knew would not work in Canada simply because Canadians do business differently?
Sales principles are generally the same in every country in the world – you need to prospect in order to find new customers; approach them; present your product or service; handle objections and, ultimately, close the sale. However, each country has its own written and unwritten code of conduct.
Our business customs may be similar to those in the US or UK, but etiquette is very important. In Canada, excessive body contact, gestures in greeting or loud conversation is generally frowned upon. We Canadians are, overall, a polite and respectful people, and are perhaps slightly more reserved than our southern neighbours.

US businesspeople should guard against assuming that Canadians are just like Americans as this is an assumption which Canadians might find offensive. Canadians are different in that we have a different way of selling and doing business. Our business communication is different. Our business culture is different. A new method of cold calling can be borne of our own practices and preferences for selling – I call this “The Canadian Way of Selling”.
I respect authors from other countries and the knowledge that they share in their books, audio CDs, lectures and seminars. However, once they cross the border they’re perhaps not entirely sure of how different our market can be and of the rules that apply here and those that do not. The tips, tricks and techniques from foreign authors may certainly be applied, but they are not adjusted and customized for a better fit into our local Canadian market.
